Skilled Migrant Category

Skilled Migrant Category Pathway:

The Skilled Migrant Category (SMC) stands out as the most widely chosen pathway to residence in New Zealand for migrants and their families.

Acquiring a resident visa through the Skilled Migrant Category enables you to live, work, and study in New Zealand indefinitely, including the inclusion of your partner and dependent children aged 24 and under. This visa policy operates on a points system, incorporating various elements considered key employability and settlement indicators. Applicants initiate the journey to becoming a New Zealand resident by submitting an online Expression of Interest. Generally, a job offer is necessary to meet the points threshold and progress to the subsequent step of the Resident Visa Application.

Visawise NZ offers comprehensive support to ensure a successful completion of this process.

Formally, the SMC pathway involves two primary stages:

Expression of Interest (EOI)
Residence Visa Application

In certain instances, an external assessment of the applicant’s qualifications by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) might be necessary, and specific professions may require registration with the relevant professional body.

In reality, the journey to becoming a permanent resident under the SMC policy is more intricate than it may initially seem.

STAGE 1: Expression of Interest (EOI) STAGE 2: Residence Application

In your online Expression of Interest, you will allocate points based on your qualifications, work experience, age, and other relevant factors. All received Expressions of Interest are systematically ranked from the highest to lowest points and placed into a Pool.

Immigration New Zealand conducts Selection every fortnight, selecting Expressions of Interest with the highest point scores from the Pool. Although the SMC policy sets the minimum EOI submission requirement at 100 points, actual selection from the Pool necessitates a points score of 160 or more. Expressions of Interest surpassing this threshold are automatically chosen.

Successfully selected Expressions of Interest undergo a preliminary assessment during which Immigration New Zealand scrutinizes the credibility of the information provided in the EOI.

In the initial phase of this stage, your application for a Resident Visa is submitted to Immigration New Zealand. This includes all necessary documents supporting the point claims made in the Expression of Interest.

Upon lodging your resident visa application, Immigration New Zealand assesses it against Government residence policy. This evaluation considers your potential to settle successfully and contribute meaningfully to New Zealand's social and economic development.

The assessment, including information gained from any conducted interviews, influences the decision. Depending on your ability to demonstrate successful settlement potential, your application may result in the approval of a Resident Visa. Alternatively, you might be granted a Work Visa, allowing you to establish yourself in skilled employment in New Zealand.
